24th February – Fremantle, Rottnest Island

Tickets had been booked for our day out with Linda & Don to Rottnest Island. We were picked up at the hotel and soon off on our adventure. It was a hot day, so we were glad of the frequent bus schedule.

We had two or three stops taking in the sights. Lovely views, birds, seals, but the quokkas, for which the island is famous, were being elusive. Well I suppose they feel the heat too. I eventually decided they may be sheltering in the undergrowth. Seeing some relatively fresh droppings, I took a closer look. Sure enough, there were a couple hiding way back under some bushes. Not great to photograph. Then by chance I checked elsewhere and found three more, hiding in less dense growth. So we saw our quokkas. Not as easy to see as is suggested by advertisements for the island.

Returning to the main public area near the wharf, we took a look around the shops and found the ice cream parlour. A just reward for all our wandering in the heat of the day.

The ferry back did not connect with a return bus to the hotel, so we walked. An easy walk, Fremantle is quite flat near the waterfront. Back at the hotel it was time for a nap before heading out to meet some others also boarding in Fremantle.

We had a lovely evening and met some new cruisers. All in all a fine end to our land tour. Tomorrow we board the ship.
